Adam’s May Fine Wine & Spirits Auction brings together a selection of mature and investment-grade wines drawn from a number of carefully assembled private collections. Spanning 400 lots, the sale offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire many of the world’s most celebrated wines across Bordeaux, Burgundy, Italy, Champagne and beyond.

The sale is anchored by an outstanding selection of Bordeaux, including Château Pétrus 2012, Château Cheval Blanc 1982, Château Lafite Rothschild 1996 and Château Latour 1982. Particularly notable is a Château Mouton Rothschild 2006–2017 twelve-year vertical, showcasing one of Pauillac’s greatest estates across an extraordinary modern era.

Other highlights include Château Palmer 2000, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2010, Château Lynch-Bages 2000, Château Batailley 2005 and the rare Château Langoa-Barton 200th Anniversary Case.

Burgundy is equally well represented, with wines from some of the region’s most revered domaines. Highlights include Domaine Armand Rousseau Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2022, Emmanuel Rouget Echézeaux Grand Cru 2022, Domaine Georges & Christophe Roumier Les Cras 2022, and Domaine Pierre Damoy Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru 2017. Collectors of mature white Burgundy will also recognise the significance of Coche-Dury Meursault 2002.

Italy features prominently throughout the catalogue, led by Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 2016 offered in double magnum format, Giacomo Conterno Monfortino 2001, Roberto Voerzio Cerequio 1996, Giuseppe Rinaldi ‘Tre Tine’ 2016 and a magnum of Gaja Sperss 1988.

Among the many standout bottles, one personal favourite remains the 1988 Château d’Yquem.

The sale also carries a particularly charming connection to Dublin’s wine heritage, with several bottles bearing the labels of wine merchant Mitchell & Son of Kildare Street, once neighbours of Adam’s themselves. Among the highlights are a limited-edition Château Palmer 1995 bicentenary bottling and a 1955 Cockburn’s Vintage Port bottled in Dublin in 1957.
Only a short stroll away on Dawson Street, the historic Royal Irish Automobile Club was home to La Ruelle restaurant, from whose cellar this auction includes a carefully preserved group of classic European wines originally acquired for restaurant service and entertaining over many years.

"I should declare my hand. I have a weakness for pictures that punch above their physical weight, and for artists who have been quietly underrated for too long. This pair is both. They are intimate enough to live with at close quarters and serious enough to repay any amount of looking. If the market has lately shown signs of catching up with eighteenth-century Irish painting and I think it has, these two small panels feel, to me, like exactly the sort of thing that will look obvious in twenty years’ time."

Buying at Auction and the Role of Antiques in a Modern Home

Important Irish Art Auction Highlights

2024 is a year in which Adam’s wants to recognise the key role buying antique furniture and furnishings at auction contributes greatly to the sustainable initiative. In 2019 the Environmental Protection Agency reported stark figures that each year in Ireland 1.2 million reusable bulky items, primarily furniture goes into landfill. Similar to the problem of ‘fast fashion’, the constant production and consumption of new items is leading to rapidly growing waste problem. We want to acknowledge those who are already buying second hand or antique furniture at auction and to encourage new buyers by highlighting the benefits of acquiring affordable, well-made quality items that are built to last.

Yvonne Aupicq had met Orpen, we understand, while working as a nurse during the war. He had been admitted to hospital with a suspected case of scabies which ended up being a far more serious case of blood poisoning as he recounts in his wartime memoir ‘An Onlooker in France’. Their relationship continued after 1918 when Orpen was appointed as the official artist to The Paris Peace Conference. They relocated to capital and over the following decade he painted her numerous times, often nude as in Amiens 1914, or The Rape and Nude Girl Reading (1921). Working with her as his model during these early years after the war allowed Orpen an opportunity to re-fuel his creativity.

"Beating the bounds is a tradition that can be traced back to the medieval period. At this time, land was divided into parishes and the clergy and church wardens held the responsibility for its upkeep and management. It was up to the Church to ensure that its parishioners knew the local boundary lines and, before maps became commonplace, this had to be kept as a mental record."
