For this sale, we wanted to offer a more direct reflection of the items within a real interior setting.
We chose a location that would best highlight these pieces, the wonderful setting of a Georgian townhouse on Henrietta Street, Dublin. You will notice for the cover image of the catalogue, and throughout, there are interior shots, showing some pieces from the auction in situ in this striking architectural space. Within the catalogue they act as natural pauses, leading from one section to another.
On the one hand by placing the items of furniture, paintings, smaller decorative objects within a space that would have originally houses such pieces, their true character emerges.
However, it also expresses the timeless quality of antique furnishings, that they can be incorporated into our modern homes, alongside other styles, or used in new ways, different to their original function. By presenting images of the items from the sale arranged together in different rooms, it allows potential buyers to better imagine how they would look in their own homes.
Amongst some of the pieces we selected to highlight is an oak framed settee (lot 192 €2,000 – 4,000) with fantastic art nouveau upholstery. This would be a wonderful addition to a hall as a bench as well as in a sitting/drawing room.
For the cover image, we wanted to create an interior shot which highlighted the variety of items in the sale. The wingback settee in cream damask (lot280 €600 – 800) would fit perfectly into an alcove either side a fire place. The William & Mary period cushion framed mirror (lot277 €300 – 400) whose oxidised glass plate offers more unusual and muted reflections of a room. The neat George IV sidetable, is a useful addition to any space, along with its attractive spiral turned carving to the legs (lot279 €300 – 500). While the 19thcentury portrait (lot276 €200 -400) with its ornate gilt frame adds some richness and warmth when hung above the mantlepiece.
Lot 261 (€800 – 1,200), George III Mahogany chest on chest, reflects the simplicity of a well-made piece of furniture. We used it in a more paired back image, to highlight the quality of the craftsmanship, but also to show how a single piece can command a space.
The model of a sailing boat (lot 210 €200 – 300) sits elegantly on top.
Buying at Auction and the Role of Antiques in a Modern Home
Important Irish Art Auction Highlights
Oliver Dowling Collection by Aidan Dunne
2024 is a year in which Adam’s wants to recognise the key role buying antique furniture and furnishings at auction contributes greatly to the sustainable initiative. In 2019 the Environmental Protection Agency reported stark figures that each year in Ireland 1.2 million reusable bulky items, primarily furniture goes into landfill. Similar to the problem of ‘fast fashion’, the constant production and consumption of new items is leading to rapidly growing waste problem. We want to acknowledge those who are already buying second hand or antique furniture at auction and to encourage new buyers by highlighting the benefits of acquiring affordable, well-made quality items that are built to last.

Yvonne Aupicq had met Orpen, we understand, while working as a nurse during the war. He had been admitted to hospital with a suspected case of scabies which ended up being a far more serious case of blood poisoning as he recounts in his wartime memoir ‘An Onlooker in France’. Their relationship continued after 1918 when Orpen was appointed as the official artist to The Paris Peace Conference. They relocated to capital and over the following decade he painted her numerous times, often nude as in Amiens 1914, or The Rape and Nude Girl Reading (1921). Working with her as his model during these early years after the war allowed Orpen an opportunity to re-fuel his creativity.

"Beating the bounds is a tradition that can be traced back to the medieval period. At this time, land was divided into parishes and the clergy and church wardens held the responsibility for its upkeep and management. It was up to the Church to ensure that its parishioners knew the local boundary lines and, before maps became commonplace, this had to be kept as a mental record."
