On Wednesday the 27th of July Adam’s sale of ‘The John Rogers Vintage Poster Collection,’ will close. This online auction consists of 420 lots and bidding is now live. For this auction, we produced an online-only catalogue, featuring the 420 lots and divided in seven categories: Travel, Ireland, Food and Drinks, Fashion and Leisure, Sports, Art Music and Theatre and finally a miscellaneous selection. The collection will be on view in Adam’s on Thursday the 21st and Friday the 22ndof July, from 10am to 5pm.
John’s passion for posters saw him open Gallery 29 on Molesworth Street, a passion project more than anything, Gallery 29 was a chance for John to share his love for vintage posters with buyers, friends and collectors. The catalogue features a great number of vintage travel posters. Many of these encapsulate the glamour associated with international travel in the 20th century, as well as an extensive selection of horse-racing posters, another one of John’s interests. This collection will appeal to a wide range of buyers, from someone who is just starting out collecting posters to a seasoned collector who is after a special piece.
Whether you are browsing the collection in the salesroom in Adam’s or through our Virtual Tour of the saleroom, here is a selection of a few lots you won’t want to miss.
Lot 39 is a poster by French artist Leon Constant Duval. The poster titled Amboise Les Chateaux de la Loire, is a lithograph, linen backed and it’s roughly dated around the 1930s. The artwork is one of several commissioned to Duval by the French railway authorities between the 1910s and late 1930s to advertise the newly nationalised railway system. The piece is estimated at € 800 to 1,200.
Lot 106 is a 1930s lithograph of Dunluce Castle in Co. Armagh by British painter Julius Olsson. Olsson was a member of the Royal Academy and was famed for his maritime compositions as well as being a keen seaman himself. Olsson captures the moment that a heavenly light illuminates the castle. Similarly to the previous lot, this one too was commission by the railway authorities, in this case the London, Midland and Scottish Railway with the intent of promoting train travel to Northern Ireland.
Lot 235 is recognisable as it features on the cover of our catalogue. This vintage advertisement for ‘Cycles De Dion-Bouton,’ by Felix Fourney is a lithograph from 1925. While De Dion-Bouton is better known for their manufacturing of automobiles and railcars, their production extended to bicycles too. In the 1920s, De Dion-Bouton hired budding French artist Felix Fourney to advertise their latest production of women’s bicycles. Over the years, this image has developed an almost iconic status, becoming instantly recognisable and a must-have for vintage advertainment collectors.
This collection is a testimony to the late John Rogers and whether you are a novice or a seasoned collector, you will find something to tickle from fancies. Any poster purchased would see a fine addition to a collection and the continuation of John’s Legacy.

Buying at Auction and the Role of Antiques in a Modern Home
Important Irish Art Auction Highlights
Oliver Dowling Collection by Aidan Dunne
2024 is a year in which Adam’s wants to recognise the key role buying antique furniture and furnishings at auction contributes greatly to the sustainable initiative. In 2019 the Environmental Protection Agency reported stark figures that each year in Ireland 1.2 million reusable bulky items, primarily furniture goes into landfill. Similar to the problem of ‘fast fashion’, the constant production and consumption of new items is leading to rapidly growing waste problem. We want to acknowledge those who are already buying second hand or antique furniture at auction and to encourage new buyers by highlighting the benefits of acquiring affordable, well-made quality items that are built to last.

Yvonne Aupicq had met Orpen, we understand, while working as a nurse during the war. He had been admitted to hospital with a suspected case of scabies which ended up being a far more serious case of blood poisoning as he recounts in his wartime memoir ‘An Onlooker in France’. Their relationship continued after 1918 when Orpen was appointed as the official artist to The Paris Peace Conference. They relocated to capital and over the following decade he painted her numerous times, often nude as in Amiens 1914, or The Rape and Nude Girl Reading (1921). Working with her as his model during these early years after the war allowed Orpen an opportunity to re-fuel his creativity.

"Beating the bounds is a tradition that can be traced back to the medieval period. At this time, land was divided into parishes and the clergy and church wardens held the responsibility for its upkeep and management. It was up to the Church to ensure that its parishioners knew the local boundary lines and, before maps became commonplace, this had to be kept as a mental record."
