Several notable paintings from the Uriarte y Piñeiro Collection will be featured in the Country House Collections at Townley Hall auction on Tuesday, October 13th.
The Uriarte y Piñeiro Collection was established by brothers Arturo and Leopoldo, sons of an affluent Basque family. Both brothers lived in Buenos Aires and became prominent and respected physicians and researchers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Arturo and Leopoldo spent holidays in Europe where their passion for collecting developed into acquiring magnificent European and Spanish 19th and early 20th works as well as books and furniture.
Leopoldo was a professor at the University of Buenos Aires, who dedicated his life to research with a focus on the bubonic plague. He was a founder of the Instituto Bacteriológico, Muñiz Hospital (now named Instituto Malbrán in memory of his colleague Dr Malbrán). After Leopoldo’s death, his personal library was donated by his widow Carlota Petrone Bonorino to the National Library, Buenos Aires. Arturo was a renowned clinical doctor and surgeon.
Arturo was a founder of what is now known as Hospital Fernández and was an initial director from 1888-1910. A large proportion of his art collection was housed in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes of Buenos Aires(National Museum of Fine Arts), where it remained until 1991 and subsequently returned to the descendants of the family.
Leopoldo and Arturo’s collection provides insight into the collecting trends of the late nineteenth century, as the artists featured in this sale would have been contemporary at the time. The two brothers had a keen eye for paintings and particular themes are evident among the works they collected. The warm, inviting colour palettes, and depictions of friends enjoying each other's company, a sailboat in a calm harbour, families celebrating music together, and close-up, intimate portraits all tell us something about Leopoldo and Arturo’s values.
