Seven masked thieves, two trucks and 30,000 bottles: details of the theft from Antinori’s warehouse in Tuscany, only revealed last week, read like a film plot. The haul, reportedly worth €5 million, included Tignanello, Solaia and Guado al Tasso, some of Italy’s most recognisable fine wines.
Owned by the same family for more than 600 years, Antinori is one of Italy's most celebrated wine producers. And, generous as they are, "help yourself to a case" was never meant quite so literally.

The wine had already been prepared for shipment overseas, allowing the thieves to move thousands of cases quickly after disabling the alarms. Antinori has since alerted customers worldwide in the hope of tracing the missing bottles and preventing their resale.
Fortunately, there are simpler ways to move a wine collection than two trucks in the middle of the night; An auction, for instance.

Adam’s is now inviting consignments for our December Fine Wine & Spirits auction. Great Italian wines such as Sassicaia, Tignanello, Solaia and Gaja are welcome, alongside Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and collectible spirits! Whether you have a few bottles tucked away or a larger cellar, we would be happy to discuss their auction potential.
If your collection arrived in two trucks from Tuscany last weekend, we’ll have to pass.

"I should declare my hand. I have a weakness for pictures that punch above their physical weight, and for artists who have been quietly underrated for too long. This pair is both. They are intimate enough to live with at close quarters and serious enough to repay any amount of looking. If the market has lately shown signs of catching up with eighteenth-century Irish painting and I think it has, these two small panels feel, to me, like exactly the sort of thing that will look obvious in twenty years’ time."

Adam’s is honoured to present works from the collection of Lord Rossmore in the upcoming Country House Collections auction at Howth Castle on 28th April. It is seldom that an influential Irish family collection that has survived through the generations comes to the open market.
